Abridged Death Certificate
• A abridged Marriage certificate is a certificate of death showing deceased full names, reason and date of death.
• The abridged birth certificate is a computer print out and the document can be apostilled or legalised.
• To obtain a unabridged birth certificate application form BI 154 must be completed and handed in at any office of the department of Home Affairs with the prescribed fee
• You can download the application for a abridgedd birth certificate from the official web site at http://www.dha.gov.za/documents/bi-132.pdf
• The issue time for a abridged death certificate is between 10 minutes and a few hours, depending on how busy home affairs are at that day. .
Why does it take so long to obtain unabridged certificates and vault copies? The details are kept on paper in secure vaults. When a application is done for either a unabridged birth certificate or a vault copy of the birth certificate the processing department must apply for the original file from the vaults. On receipt the computer system is first updated and only then the certificates are issued.
